Hello beautiful people! It’s the middle of the week! How is yours going so far? Mine is going pretty well. I’ve gotten some work done at home and I am excited for the rest of the week. Possibly trying to go see Everything Everywhere All At Once again. That movie is absurd but amazing. I loved it.
Anyway, it’s WWW Wednesday! It’s the day when we answer the three W’s: What are you currently reading? What did you recently finish reading? What do you think you’ll read next? It’s hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words but was previously hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm.
What are you currently reading?
Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldtree
Okay, so I started this book yesterday, and it’s good. It’s a cozy fantasy story about an Orc who decides she’s had enough of her life and just wants to open a café. The only problem is that my copy of the book has holes in it! It’s a self published book and I don’t want to hurt the authors sales, but I don’t want to keep a damaged copy. I know it’s available on Kindle Unlimited, but I want to own this one. Oh well…the moral dilemma.
What did you recently finish reading?
The Impossible Us by Sarah Lotz
So I have a review of this one coming up tomorrow. This book is complicated for me. Very complicated.
Visions in Death by J.D. Robb
This marks book nineteen and month four of the re-read. I’m really having a lot of fun with the re-read, and I’m glad I’m not trying to keep such a brutal pace like I was back in February.
What will you read next?
Survivor In Death by J.D. Robb
I remember this being on of my favorites in the series, so it has that to live up to. Here’s hoping!
Hello beautiful people! It’s a beautiful day outside today in the Dallas area and I have been out running errands on this blue sky day. But it’s Top Ten Tuesday! Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and was originally created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week is all about bookish merch I would love to own…hence the title.
This T-Shirt from TeeTurtle
I think it accurately displays how we all feel after the end of a good book. We get the sads cause it’s over. Sometimes we get the sads becuase it really made us cry! You can find the shirt here.
This T-Shirt from Out of Print
This book sparked a love of Greek mythology that still lives inside of me. You can find the shirt here. Bonus points to Out of Print for using the sales of their shirts to fund literacy programs across the country.
This T-Shirt from Etsy
I really want this one, given where I now work. You can find it here.
This Book Sleeve
I found this one whilst scrolling the interwebs a while ago. I feel it rings true. You can find it here.
This Sticky Tab Set
I really want to try to annotate my books, especially those I want to review that aren’t on my Kindle. This seem like good tabs to use for that. Also, there is about 480 of them. You can find them here.
This Bookish Puzzle
This pretty puzzle looks as frustrating as it does fun. it would look great spread out on my coffee table. Until my cat knocks it over. You can pick it up here.
This Bookish Embroidery
Embroidery is one of those hobbies you can do while listening to an audiobook. I love it. And I want this kit. You can find it here.
This Car Decal
I just got a new car, so I’m a little hesitant about this one, but it looks like something I would have on my vehicle. It’s available here.
This Unique and Adorable Bookmark
I love the way this adorable little bookmark looks. And you get eight of them! You can pick them up here.
This Magnet
I want this for my TBR cart, not my fridge. But I love it so much! You can find it on ETSY here.
Is it cheating that three of my bookish things are t-shirts? I don’t think so, as I want them all. What’s really funny is there were a few things I went to go add and I realized I had already purchased them. Oh well.
Hello beautiful people! Happy Saturday! Today is book club day for me, but I haven’t read the book. Oops.
What I read this week:
So This is Ever After by F.T. Lukens
So this YA book is about what happens after the chosen one kills the bad guy and takes up the crown…only to find out that the crown has a magical spell on it that means he has to be married by the time he’s 18 or he dies. It was so good! I laughed out loud in a few places and really got into this character-driven story.
Divided In Death by J.D. Robb
This is the eighteenth book in the In Death series. I really enjoyed the story about a woman who finds out that her husband has been cheating on her only to wind up framed for the murders of both him and his lover.
Instagram Posts:
You know, I put this here to help motivate me to post more to Instagram… it’s not working.
Blog Posts:
Tuesday was all about Authors I Haven’t Read Yet, but that I Want To. Gotta love those Top Ten Tuesday Posts.
Wednesday brought us WWW Wednesday. I really enjoyed one of the books I read. See above.
So I decided that I had to find a new way to store my TBR pile. Well, piles. They were all over the place. I have a TBR cart, a unit by the front door that was piled high, and there were books shoved haphazardly under the TV.
So yeah. I had to buy a bookcase to hold my TBR. Right now it’s organized by genre. But that may change. I may switch to alphabetical or something else. I will say this, I still have my TBR cart, it’s where my YA books live, and under the TV is where all my Book of the Month editions will go. The space at the bottom of the bookcase is just room to grow. And we all need room to grow, right?
What I don’t need is more books. Seeing it all laid out like this makes me think I have a problem. What do you think? Do I have a problem?
Hello beautiful people! What a fine Friday it’s turning out to be. I say that, having just woken up and not had any tea yet. But at least the Hubs and I are both off of work and get to spend some quality time together today! Huzzah for Friday!
And since it’s Friday, It’s First Lines Friday!
First Lines Friday is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words, or, as her blog is going by now, Emma IRL. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author, or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
Finally… reveal the book!
Today’s book just came out this year and I have high hopes for it.
The Lines:
She gives birth in mud and mire. She squats and strains under the fog-shrowded bower of a gnarled cottongum.
Intrigued?
The Book:
The Starless Crown by James Rollins
A gifted student foretells an apocalypse. Her reward is a sentence of death.
Fleeing into the unknown she is drawn into a team of outcasts:
A broken soldier, who once again takes up the weapons he’s forbidden to wield and carves a trail back home.
A drunken prince, who steps out from his beloved brother’s shadow and claims a purpose of his own.
An imprisoned thief, who escapes the crushing dark and discovers a gleaming artifact – one that will ignite a power struggle across the globe.
On the run, hunted by enemies old and new, they must learn to trust each other in order to survive in a world evolved in strange, beautiful, and deadly ways, and uncover ancient secrets that hold the key to their salvation.
But with each passing moment, doom draws closer.
WHO WILL CLAIM THE STARLESS CROWN?
Sounds good, doesn’t it? What do you think? Would you pick up this book?
Hello beautiful people! How are we this fine Wednesday? I’m constantly being interrupted by my cat. She keeps walking on the keyboard. I’m going to need to get her her own computer to sit at so she won’t sit at mine.
But it’s WWW Wednesday! It’s the day when we answer the three W’s: What are you currently reading? What did you recently finish reading? What do you think you’ll read next? It’s hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words but was previously hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm.
What are you currently reading?
Divided In Death by J.D. Robb
I just started this yesterday! I’m excited to get back to the In Death re-read with this, the eighteenth book in the series.
What did you recently finish?
So This is Ever Afterby F.T. Lukens
I finished this a few days ago and if I may say, what a treat this was! I fully enjoyed getting swept up in the story. This tale asks the question “what happens after the prophecy is fulfilled?”.
What do you think you’ll read next?
Saint Death’s Daughter by C.S.E. Cooney
I received this arc a while ago and haven’t read it yet. My bad. I’m starting it this week!
Hello beautiful people! The family has departed and I’m excited to be back to my normal routine, if there ever was such a thing. But hey, it’s Tuesday! That means it’s Top Ten Tuesday!
It’s Top Ten Tuesday! Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and was originally created by The Broke and the Bookish. Today’s topic, if you haven’t guessed from the title, is all about authors I haven’t gotten to yet, but want to.
Diana Gabaldon
I have yet to pick up this series, despite owning this book in three formats. And given that all she has really written is the Outlander series, I have to at least give these novels a try.
Naomi Novik
So despite owning three books set in three different worlds by this author, I have yet to read a single one. I need to work on that, I think.
Neal Shusterman
I also own a few books by this author and have read none. Are we noticing a pattern here?
Octavia E. Butler
I can’t believe I have never read any of her work! From what I understand, her writing was incredibly prophetic.
Sarah J. Maas
This is another example of “I own all the things and have never read them”. I have gotten several of her books, on sale because bargains, and just haven’t gotten around to them. I have problems.
N.K. Jemisin
We just picked up The Broken Earth trilogy a few days ago from our used book store (huzzah!) and The Hubs is reading it right now. He’s on book two, so I have high hopes.
Sara Douglass
So I bought this entire series based on the covers, and haven’t read them yet. I mean look at that art! I have no idea what to expect, of course, but that cover!
Fredrick Backman
I’ve heard amazing things about Backman’s writing. And I own Anxious People. I have high hopes based on everything I have heard about him.
Ta-Nehisi Coates
I have heard nothing but good things about this author’s writing. I need to get to it sooner rather than later.
Jennifer L. Armentrout
I own the first book in this particular series but haven’t read anything else by the author either.
And there is my list. What does your list look like?
Hello beautiful people! I’m running around having a rollicking good time with family right now, so here is my weekly wrap-up for you!
What I Read This Week:
So because I have been busy with family this week, I haven’t really been able to finish a book this week. I started several but finished not a one. Oh well. Life, it does happen.
Monday came in hot with my March Reading Wrap-Up. I started off the month in a reading slump, so go see how I did!
Tuesday was a Top 5 Tuesday with my most anticipated reads for April through June. It was hard to narrow these down, but I did it. I’m so proud of me.
Wednesday saw a WWW Wednesday post. No one should be surprised by this.
In Other News:
Apparently, I’m late to the game on this one, but it just came across my TikTok FYP the other day. Should you return books to bookshops after you have read the entire thing? My personal stance is no. If I read an entire book and I don’t like it, I’m taking it either to the library to be donated, or to the local used bookstore.
Hello beautiful people! It’s hump day! And I have to go to work! That being said, you probably won’t hear from me for the rest of the week, as the Hubs and I have family coming into town.
All The Feels by Olivia Dade
I started this as an audiobook, and I’m really enjoying the narrator, Kelsey Navarro. But I also have the physical copy should my need to finish it faster hit me. it’s really good.
So This is Ever After by F.T. Lukens
I just started this last night, so I can’t form an opinion yet, but I have high hopes! Also, they don’t tell you that the back of this book is just as stunning as the front!
What did you recently finish reading?
Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert
I really enjoyed listening to this entire series on audiobook. They were all so good, and I found a lot of things that I can relate to in this book. But I loved this entry into the series. It was such a good ending. TV Show writers wish they could end a series this well.
What do you think you’ll read next?
Divided in Death by J.D. Robb
This is the 18th book in the In Death series. Eve must solve a murder. Gasp!
And there ya go. My reads! What will you be reading next?
Hello beautiful people! I apologize for the late post. Today got away from me. Also, there are cookies on my desk and YouTube videos about the Galatic StarCruiser that needed watching. Basically, the ADHD was strong with me.
Today I am doing Top 5 Tuesday! Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm, and it is now hosted at Meeghan reads. You can find the list of topics for April thru June here!
This week it’s the most anticipated new reads of April through June of 2022!
Onward!
Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow- April 5th
Summer 1995: Ten-year-old Joan, her mother, and her younger sister flee her father’s explosive temper and seek refuge at her mother’s ancestral home in Memphis. This is not the first time violence has altered the course of the family’s trajectory. Half a century earlier, Joan’s grandfather built this majestic house in the historic Black neighborhood of Douglass—only to be lynched days after becoming the first Black detective in the city. Joan tries to settle into her new life, but family secrets cast a longer shadow than any of them expected.
As she grows up, Joan finds relief in her artwork, painting portraits of the community in Memphis. One of her subjects is their enigmatic neighbor Miss Dawn, who claims to know something about curses, and whose stories about the past help Joan see how her passion, imagination, and relentless hope are, in fact, the continuation of a long matrilineal tradition. Joan begins to understand that her mother, her mother’s mother, and the mothers before them persevered, made impossible choices, and put their dreams on hold so that her life would not have to be defined by loss and anger—that the sole instrument she needs for healing is her paintbrush.
I may already have this one in my possession.
Kaikeyi: A Novel by Vaishnavi Patel- April 26th
“I was born on the full moon under an auspicious constellation, the holiest of positions—much good it did me.”
So begins Kaikeyi’s story. The only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, she is raised on tales of the gods: how they churned the vast ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, how they vanquish evil and ensure the land of Bharat prospers, and how they offer powerful boons to the devout and the wise. Yet she watches as her father unceremoniously banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to howgreat a marriage alliance she can secure. And when she calls upon the gods for help, they never seem to hear.
Desperate for some measure of independence, she turns to the texts she once read with her mother and discovers a magic that is hers alone. With this power, Kaikeyi transforms herself from an overlooked princess into a warrior, diplomat, and most favored queen, determined to carve a better world for herself and the women around her.
But as the evil from her childhood stories threatens the cosmic order, the path she has forged clasheswith the destiny the gods have chosen for her family. And Kaikeyi must decide if resistance is worth the destruction it will wreak—and what legacy she intends to leave behind.
I might be getting this from Book of the Month. Maybe.
When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill-May 3rd
Alex Green is a young girl in a world much like ours, except for its most seminal event: the Mass Dragoning of 1955, when hundreds of thousands of ordinary wives and mothers sprouted wings, scales, and talons; left a trail of fiery destruction in their path; and took to the skies. Was it their choice? What will become of those left behind? Why did Alex’s beloved aunt Marla transform but her mother did not? Alex doesn’t know. It’s taboo to speak of.
Forced into silence, Alex nevertheless must face the consequences of this astonishing event: a mother more protective than ever; an absentee father; the upsetting insistence that her aunt never even existed; and watching her beloved cousin Bea become dangerously obsessed with the forbidden.
I have seen some great reviews for this online, and I am really looking forward to it.
The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah- May 17th
Neither here nor there, but long ago…
Loulie al-Nazari is the Midnight Merchant: a criminal who, with the help of her jinn bodyguard, hunts and sells illegal magic. When she saves the life of a cowardly prince, she draws the attention of his powerful father, the sultan, who blackmails her into finding an ancient lamp that has the power to revive the barren land—at the cost of sacrificing all jinn.
With no choice but to obey or be executed, Loulie journeys with the sultan’s oldest son to find theartifact. Aided by her bodyguard, who has secrets of his own, they must survive ghoul attacks, outwit a vengeful jinn queen, and confront a malicious killer from Loulie’s past. And, in a world where story is reality and illusion is truth, Loulie will discover that everything—her enemy, her magic, even her own past—is not what it seems, and she must decide who she will become in this new reality.
I’m not gonna lie, this one sounds really good.
From Bad to Cursed by Lana Harper- May 17th
Wild child Isidora Avramov is a thrill chaser, adept demon summoner, and—despite the whole sexy-evil-sorceress vibe—also a cuddly animal lover. When she’s not designing costumes and new storylines for the Arcane Emporium’s haunted house, Issa’s nursing a secret, conflicted dream of ditching her family’s witchy business to become an indie fashion designer in her own right.
But when someone starts sabotaging the celebrations leading up to this year’s Beltane festival with dark, dangerous magic, a member of the rival Thorn family gets badly hurt—throwing immediate suspicion on the Avramovs. To clear the Avramov name and step up for her family when they need her the most, Issa agrees to serve as a co-investigator, helping none other than Rowan Thorn get to the bottom of things.
Rowan is the very definition of lawful good, so tragically noble and by-the-book he makes Issa’s teeth hurt. In accordance with their families’ complicated history, he and Issa have been archenemies for years and have grown to heartily loathe each other. But as the unlikely duo follow a perplexing trail of clues to a stunning conclusion, Issa and Rowan discover how little they really know each other… and stumble upon a maddening attraction that becomes harder to ignore by the day.
I loved Payback’s a Witch and I am really looking forward to the sequel!
These are not the only books I am looking forward to. I could make a much longer list. Seriously, a much, much longer list.
Well hello, beautiful people! Happy Monday! How was your weekend? I spent mine doing the glamorous work of errands and chores. Always fun.
Today is Monthly Reading Wrap-Up time!
Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
I listened to the audiobook of this story and fell in love with Chloe and Red. Chloe has an invisible disability and Red is actively dealing with his mental health. I loved watching these two explore these aspects of their lives with each other. Four Stars.
Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi
A humorous story about a man who goes from food delivery driver to working for a mysterious organization that protects kaijus. If you want to see my full thought you can check out my review here. Four stars.
Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert
I also fell in love with Dani and Zaf in this second story about the Brown sisters. I seem to really love the fake dating trope, and this one has that. This one also deals with mental health, specifically anxiety and depression. Another fours star read. ‘
The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams
This story about a group of men who improve their relationships with the help of romance novels was so much fun to read. Four stars.
In Death Books 15 thru 17 by J.D. Robb
I managed to read three books in my In Death re-read. Purity in Death got four stars. Portrait in Death got five stars. and Imitation in Death got five stars.
I managed to read seven books this month! Not bad considering I was afraid I was going to be stuck in a reading slump after the beginning of the month.
On to the stats!
I know I say this every month, but I love looking at my stats. They bring me so much joy. You can get your stats, for free, on The Storygraph.
